The Relationship Paradox

So here’s one of the most interesting conversations that I’ve ever had ( and had repeatedly) about relationships. It seems that most Christian women want their men to take a leading role in the relationship – this is a pretty biblical ideal. The problem is that while they expect men to step up, they continually have a tendency to try and take that leading role away from the men in their lives. If you really think about it it is true.

I’m pretty sure that biblically marriage/romantic relationships are meant to be at the least a 51%/49% split between man/woman. You can read about what I’ve said in Genesis Chapter 3 – “And your desire shall be for your husband and he shall rule over you.” What does that mean? Study a little bit and you’ll find out that it means in God’s overall plans men are designed to be leaders (loving leaders/husbands mind you that would love thier spouses and signifigant others as Christ loved the church – serving them, keeping their best interests in mind, and giving all to them up to our very lives) but part of the curse is that women will consistently attempt to usurp the God given authority of men in their relationships.

Think about that one!

Barack Obama

I just finished Barack Obama’s book, “The Audacity of Hope”. And I have to say that I like the man. I may not agree with all of his views ( though I do agree with many), but I do agree with the way that he engages questions and issues. His views are well thought out. His points are well articulated. And, most importantly, he has real reasons for what he believes.

After finishing this book I can say that the only thing that really turns me off about Obama is that he seems to support quotas for employment and education – at least that’s the way he comes across when speaking about it. Personally, I can’t stand that. It may seem unfair, but people deserve jobs based on thier past efforts, developed skills, and God given talents. Race, Creed, and Color should play no part in your employment though there are exceptions.

So I can say that Obama not only believes in the “Audacity of Hope”, but also seems to have a very strong character and enough audacity to stand up and voice his rather well informed opinions.

Struggles and Labor

Recently I’ve been reading through the book of Colossians. It’s become my devotional habit to reread some of the smaller books of the Bible multiple times per week and to simply reflect upon what I’ve read and meditate on the passages.

Now it comes as no surprise that often times a single verse in a book will stick out to me and stick with me throughout the week. This week it has been Col. 1.28-29 – “We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ. To this end I labor, struggling with all his energy, which so powerfully works in me.

This sticks with me because I have to wonder if I am struggling hard to teach everyone that I can about Christ. Do I really spread the gospel? Is it spread through my actions and my life? Is it spread through my teaching? Do I actually talk about my faith openly, sharing it with my friends and colleagues? Or do I simply hide behind my well structured fence of Christian friends and fellow believers? This is a really tough question.

It’s tough because I don’t know how I really feel about sharing the Gospel. I mean, if you ask I’ll tell, but I usually don’t make it a point to share my faith. I’ve always felt my roles in the Body were to teach and to lead — to be one who helps grow others faith. I wonder if it should be more… I wonder if this is just a cop out for me…
