The Pain of Progress and Process

As an undergraduate I took a political science course that was very concerned with the idea of ends vs. means. At the time I had a thought: End and means are like an equation. The process, the means, is like the left hand side of an equation. The ends are the right hand side. In mathematics they balance each other and must lead to the same result. So the idea is that means and ends justify each other and can often force each other to be done properly.

Yet it turns out that in life this is not the case. A due process, a fair process, taking all of the right steps does not guarantee a certain end. Sometimes by following the proper process we suffer. Sometimes we even fail miserably and absolutely miss the ends that we were seeking. But the truth of the matter is that the process is what defines us. The process is what scars our face, hardens our back, builds our muscle. The process is what makes us face adversity head strong and hell bent.

A true leader will always inspire people to ideals and goals greater than himself and thier selves. He is the one willing to make the hard choice when it must be made regardless of consequences. He is the one that takes one more step forward when no one, including himself, has the will or strength to press on. A leader lives for others in a way that drives the world forward, that stimulates growth in people, and inspires this world to be a better place.

I have devoted my life to one process: Christianity. Christianity, real Christianity, forces one to struggle forward in life. Christ forces me to make hard choices, to be the better man, and, in the words of a dearest friend, to be “a man”.

The process is painful, but I will live my life by it and will be gratified to be part of the process that others go through as well as the process that I myself am struggling through. I will choose to be a Christian, to be a man, and to be a leader in this world. And I will go down to the grave struggling and striving to become such a person.
